Alan MacLeod, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pure energy. What is Pure energy? The vision of Pure energy (REGen) Ltd is to be a best value sustainable energy generation provider to businesses in our communities, playing a constructive role in maximising the proven benefits of low-cost renewable energy applications and assisting our customers in demonstrating sustainability as a core value to their customers, industry sector and our communities.

Can you give us a summary of your profile and experience to date?


I’m a graduate of ENPC Paris Tech, University of Strathclyde and Napier University, Edinburgh, and is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (RSA) and the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (ICRS). During my 30-year career I have held several senior management roles in FTSE 250 companies, latterly as a Technical Consultant and Sustainability Adviser. I founded International Renewable Energy Infrastructure Consultancy, Pure energy (REGen) Limited to add value to Renewable Energy and Circular Economy related project developments, now operating internationally.

I am a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the UK Energy Institute and Entrepreneurial Scotland. Following graduate engineer training, I was also selected by my company to participate in the UK Royal Academy of Engineering “Visiting Engineers Scheme – Japan”, spending one year on secondment to Mitsui & Co, based in Tokyo, Okayama, and latterly Hong Kong.

Can you describe Pure Energy and what you do?


The vision of Pure energy (REGen) Ltd is to provide value-based renewable energy generation solutions to SME businesses, maximising the proven benefits of low-cost renewable energy applications while supporting our customers by demonstrating sustainability to the wider stakeholder community.

The company's core business is clean energy generation, electrified transportation and waste-to-energy (W2E) Technology Design and Facilities Management, within a variety of business sector applications. Pure energy (REGen) Ltd, is an Advisory organisation approved by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), London, UK: Green Economy Transition (GET) Project Preparation and Implementation Framework, as well as the European Union (EU) EA-SME as approved Renewable Energy Consultants.

The company is currently involved in several sustainable technology advisory and project management activities, for both private and public Financial Institutions and corporate clients, with active projects ongoing in the Highlands and Islands and North West England, focused on developing sustainable project infrastructure, through market segment analysis and commercial value propositions, to support the transition to sustainable development growth within these Regions.

What is the most successful team bonding activity you have organised for your company?


We take full advantage of our office location which is by the Tayside waterfront by engaging staff in lunchtime walks and watching amusing culinary videos while having our meals. We have a friendly atmosphere at work where everyone feels comfortable talking about various topics such as news articles, leisure activities, hobbies, etc to stimulate an inclusive work environment.

What is your company’s policy on hybrid, remote, and office working? And what would be your top tips for making your solution work?


Given our current SME business profile, we have a flexible company profile with respect to working remotely or in the office. On occasion, our active projects require our staff to attend site visits and in-person meetings.

What's something that you would not scrimp on?


We would not skimp on technology applications, as like many businesses we rely on technology applications to complete our daily work tasks. We store all critical business data in our cloud-based portal, operated by Jumpcloud®. Connectivity is a core requirement of our business model, and we need to ensure the best value technology applications are available for our daily use.

What’s the most helpful thing anyone’s ever told you about maintaining/building company culture?


A company culture is effectively a reflection of the people engaged within the business. Leadership matters in all companies, as this formulated the work culture on a daily basis, and, as a leader, listening is as important as talking.


What’s your favourite thing about your job?


My favourite aspect about my role is the variety of renewable energy projects we become involved with; we are constantly faced with varying tasks and allocated responsibilities on a daily basis. This aspect motivates both myself and my team to deliver a sustainable future for our customers.
